8 oz flour
1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
1/4 pint milk
1 oz butter of substitute
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
Rub the butter into the flour; This is not essential, but it helps to keep the bread moist.
Add the salt, dissolve the bicarbonate of soda and cream of tartar in the milk.
Add to the flour.
Knead lightly and form into a round loaf.
Brush with a little milk and bake on a flat tin in the centre of a very hot oven for 15 minutes.
After this time, lower the temperature to a moderate oven and bake for another 10-15 minutes.
